Tommy Baldwin announced the formation of a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) team, Tommy Baldwin Racing (TBR), on January 8, 2009. The race team ran 25 races in 2009 in the No. 36 Toyota Camry with several different drivers including: Scott Riggs, Mike Skinner, Patrick Carpentier, Robert Richardson and Michael McDowell. TBR finished the 2009 NSCS season 41st in the Owner’s Points standings. Highlights from the season include an 18th-place finish in the AMP Energy 500 at Talladega Superspeedway in November 2009 and a 25th-place finish at the 2009 Daytona 500.
The team made a switch from Toyota to Chevrolet in the 2009 off-season and began using Earnhardt-Childress Racing engines in 2010. In an effort to develop a driver development program for TBR, Baldwin teamed up with Al Heinke in December 2009 to form Heinke-Baldwin Racing. The pair extended their relationship and developed a partnership in TBR as well in January 2010.
During the 2010 season, TBR ran both the No. 36 and 35 Chevrolets in select events. Both cars made a total of 28 starts in 2010. The team’s best finish came at Daytona International Speedway when Steve Park drove the No. 36 Richie Evans tribute car to a 13th-place finish in the Coke Zero 400. Dave Blaney drove the No. 36 to the team’s best start of seventh at Talladega Superspeedway.
Looking into the 2011 season, Baldwin’s goal for the team was to run all the races and finish the season in the top-35 in owner points. Dave Blaney, Geoffrey Bodine, Ron Fellows and Stephen Leicht competed in 44 raceswith the No. 36 Chevrolet competing in all 36 events and locking the team into the top-35 in points. Blaney tallied the team’s best finish of third in the October event at Talladega Superspeedway and led 21 laps in the spring event at the 2.66-mile track.
