Veteran Parks Tommy Baldwin Racing, Mayhew Tools 7NY in Victory Lane
Race Recap by Souza Media WINCHESTER, N.H. – Doug Coby wasn’t going to leave any questions about who was going to win in the final laps of the third NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race of the season Saturday at Monadnock Speedway. Coby pulled away after dominating the Duel at the Dog 200 and rocketed to his 35th career Whelen Modified Tour victory and second career at Monadnock driving the Mayhew Tools No. 7NY. The win was the first of the season for the six-time series champion, as Coby and the team began a busy stretch of four races in four weeks in Victory Lane. And they did it in dominating fashion – leading the most laps and cruising to the checkered flag. “We had a dominant car here today,” Coby said. “Tommy Baldwin brought some great adjustments here to try in practice since we weren’t happy with our performance last year, and we ended up going back to his first setup for the race. I’ll tell you what – I’ve won at big tracks, but it’s the little one’s that mean the most and really make me think of my roots and where I started. These quarter-mile tracks are so tough to win at… it was a great day for all of us on the Mayhew Tools team.” Doug Coby and the Tommy Baldwin Racing, Mayhew Tools team will return to racing on Friday, May 12 and Saturday, May 13 at Stafford Motor Speedway for the NAPA Spring Sizzler 100. The $20,000 to win race will have 40-lap Duel qualifying races on Friday night and the feature on Saturday afternoon, all live on FloRacing.TV. Mayhew Tools 7NY Ready For Round Three of NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Season
Race Advance By Souza Media MILFORD, Conn. – Starting a stretch of four races in four weeks, Monadnock Speedway’s Duel at the Dog 200 is on deck for Doug Coby. The Mayhew Tools, Tommy Baldwin Racing No. 7NY returns to competition on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour this Saturday, May 6 with 200 laps in the Duel at the Dog. It’s the third Whelen Modified Tour race of the season for 2023. Coby and the team finished fifth in the opener at New Smyrna in February, leading 106 laps and 13th at Richmond Raceway in March, leading 27 laps, sidelined from a chance to win with a mechanical issue in the final laps. Coby’s career at Monadnock includes a victory in 2015, as part of a championship season with Mike Smeriglio Racing. In eight starts at Monadnock, Coby has seven top-10 finishes. Last year, Coby drove Baldwin’s entry in the Monadnock event to a top-five finish. The 200-lap event on Saturday is part of the Duel at the Dog weekend, which includes 13 divisions over two days. All of the racing will air live on FloRacing.TV. “We need to be better than we were at Monadnock last year,” Coby said. “We’ve been working on it leading into the race. We’re a bit disappointed with the results in the first two races of our season because we feel like we had dominant cars in both races at times of the race and just didn’t put it all together. It’s going to be a busy stretch coming up with a lot of short track races. We need to make sure our program is on its game to be able to compete with everyone else and that starts with this weekend at Monadnock. We’re looking forward to getting up there with the Mayhew Tools team.” Saturday’s event includes one practice from 12:20-1:20 p.m., followed by Mayhew Tools qualifying at 2:30 p.m. and the green flag for 200 laps at 5 p.m. Following Monadnock, Coby, Baldwin and the Mayhew Tools team will roll to Stafford Motor Speedway for the NAPA Spring Sizzler on May 12-13, then Riverhead Raceway for 200 laps with the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour on May 20. The team will finish off the month of May with the Whelen Modified Tour at Lee USA Speedway on May 27. Monadnock’s race is the first of three in the Whelen Granite State Short Track Cup – a three-race series with extra incentive for Whelen Modified Tour teams, put together by event promoters JDV Productions. RICHMOND, Va. – In many ways, the second round of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season looked to be shaping up like another strong podium finish for Doug Coby and Tommy Baldwin Racing. In the Mayhew Tools No. 7NY, Coby qualified sixth on Friday for the Virginia is For Racing Lovers 150 at Richmond Raceway, but mother nature brought rain, winning the night, and rescheduling the race for Saturday, April 1. At the outset of the event, which took place after the NASCAR Xfinity Series race, Coby rode inside the top-five, and it wasn’t long before a round of pit stops in the middle of the race that Coby was out front and pulling away from his challengers. However, a caution just inside the final 50 laps stacked the field up again and Coby was chasing the back of eventual first-time race winner Austin Beers on the restart. While running second after the restart is when the day changed. The handling on the car drastically turned where Coby was lacking grip. The crew did find an oil leak after the race. Coby drove what he had left to finish 13th in the 150-lap race. “The handling of the car was drastically different just after the last restart,” Coby said. “I don’t know if I had anything for the 64 (Beers) to try and win, but I had a strong top-three or top-five finish at least before we had that happen. By the end of the race, I just had no grip. Thanks to the Mayhew Tools and TBR guys for working hard over what ended up being two days at the track.” The next event on the calendar for Doug Coby and the Tommy Baldwin Racing, Mayhew Tools No. 7NY team together is at Stafford Motor Speedway on April 29-30 for the NAPA Spring Sizzler, a $20,000 to win race. SOUTH BOSTON, VA -- Caleb Heady had never seen South Boston Speedway in person prior to last year’s SMART Modified Tour powered by Pace-O-Matic event at the .4-mile oval. So, like a lot of racers, he attempted to familiarize himself with the track prior to the event using the iRacing simulation. “It’s kind of funny,” Heady remarked. “Going into the South Boston race last year I told everybody I absolutely suck at that place in iRacing. I am probably the worst South Boston Speedway driver on iRacing you will ever meet. As soon as we got there, we figured it out. It clicked.” Click it did. The Shelbyville, Kentucky resident, driving for Tommy Baldwin Racing, finished third in last year’s 99-lap race. “South Boston Speedway kind of took me by surprise last year,” Heady said. “The place is crazy fast. It was really fun, really racy, and just a good overall time. I’m very excited to go back. It’s a track with a lot of grip and it’s a fast track. That’s the kind of place where I like to be.” Heady is excited about returning to South Boston Speedway for The Flying VA Classic, a 99-lap race for the SMART Modified Tour, that headlines the URW Credit Union Fools Rush 262 racing program on Saturday afternoon, April 1 at South Boston Speedway. He finished second in the season-opener at Florence (South Carolina) Motor Speedway and is looking to rebound from a 15th-place finish in last week’s race at Caraway Speedway. “It’s definitely a track I look forward to,” Heady said. “South Boston Speedway is an extremely fast racetrack. I really can’t get over how we got around that track for qualifying last year. It was pretty insane the speed we were able to carry into the corners and how much power we could get down on exit. It plays out to my cards pretty well.” The Kentucky native is confident about his chances heading into Saturday’s event. “I know as long as I keep the car beneath me and I set myself up right I can compete with just about anybody in the field,” explained Heady. “It’s playing chess, not checkers. You have to set yourself up for the end of the race, make sure all of the boxes are checked and that you’ve got the best car you can possibly have to go win the race at the end.” Heady, who has two career race wins and one career pole win on the SMART Modified Tour, entered the 2023 season as the defending series champion. In winning last year’s SMART Modified Tour title, he helped Tommy Baldwin Racing win its third championship of the 2022 season. “Last year’s championship came as kind of a surprise to us,” Heady pointed out. “It was our first time trying win the season championship. To be able to win it in our first time trying was really cool. “It takes consistency to win championships,” he continued. “Last year I got only one win on the tour. I know if we continue our consistent runs, we will be fine. This year I want at least two or three wins on the year, have some good races, put up some good performances, and try to distance myself and show people I am ready to step up and move up.” The list of Smart Stars that have filed early entries for Saturday’s event at South Boston Speedway includes current series points leader and last week’s winner at Caraway Speedway, Brandon Ward, former NASCAR Cup Series Champion Bobby Labonte, Matt Hirschman, who won last year’s South Boston Speedway race and scored 28 wins overall last season, and Burt and Jason Myers. Saturday afternoon’s URW Credit Union Fools Rush 262 racing program will consist of four races. Twin 71-lap races for the Sentara Healthcare Late Model Stock Car Division and a 21-lap race for the competitors in the Virginia State Police HEAT Hornets Division are scheduled in addition to the 99-lap SMART Modified Tour race. Mayhew Tools No. 7NY Set For Action in Virginia
Race Advance by Souza Media MILFORD, Conn. – Six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby will return to Modified competition this Friday, March 31, when Coby competes with Tommy Baldwin Racing at Richmond Raceway. Coby will drive the Mayhew Tools No. 7NY in the Virginia is For Racing Lovers 150 – the second race of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season. In the opener of the 2023 season at New Smyrna Speedway, Coby led the most laps in the 200-lap race and finished inside the top-five. The team looks to carry the momentum into the ¾-mile Richmond track and come away with a strong run. In one previous Richmond start, Coby finished fifth driving for his own team in 2021. He is hoping to improve on that and park the historic 7NY in Victory Lane on Friday night. “It’s going to be another tire strategy race,” Coby said. “I didn’t race there last year and that probably puts me at a little bit of a disadvantage because everyone has another year of setups on the changing track. But, we will lean on Tommy’s knowledge and experience setup wise. You just will have to hit the strategy right to be in contention for the win. It’s early in the season and everyone wants to go out there and end up in Victory Lane.” Fans can follow race day action at Richmond through the Doug Coby Racing Facebook page. Practice rolls from 12:45-1:55 p.m., followed by Mayhew Tools time trial qualifying at 4:15 p.m., and the green flag for the 150-lap race at 6:30 p.m. The race itself will also air live on FloRacing.TV for fans to watch. MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Tommy Baldwin Racing driver Caleb Heady will begin his quest for a second straight SMART Modified Tour championship this weekend. As the 14-race SMART Modified Tour schedule begins at Florence with the Low Country 99 this Saturday, March 4, Heady will drive the TBR historic No. 7NY at the South Carolina oval looking to get the season started on a high note. Last year, Heady won the SMART Modified Tour title and picked up a win at Caraway Speedway along the way. Two years ago, he picked up his first career Modified win at Florence on the SMART Modified Tour. Although the ultimate goal is another title in 2023, Caleb and the team would also like to score a few more checkered flags along the way. “Super excited to get back to Florence,” Heady said. “Because I scored my first win there, it’s always a sense of home for me when I head to Florence. I love the flat, worn-out surface and the tire strategy that comes into play during the race. I really feel like it plays into my favor. Obviously, the only goal we ever have showing up to the race track is to win. We will be heading there with the Tommy Baldwin Racing No. 7NY with the mindset to win – but also work hard and have fun.” Race day at Florence Motor Speedway begins on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. with qualifying for the SMART Modified Tour. The green flag for the 99-lap season-opener should be around 5:30 p.m., live on FloRacing.TV. All of the 14 SMART Modified Tour races for the season will air live on Flo Racing. Rising Star To Drive For DLP Motorsports on March 4 During NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Season Opener MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Fresh off a successful week at New Smyrna Speedway’s World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing, rising star Luke Baldwin is going Late Model racing for the first time next month. Baldwin will pilot a Pro Late Model for DLP Motorsports at Hickory Motor Speedway with sponsorship from Shoreside Support during the season-opener for the historic North Carolina facility on Saturday, March 4, with the Carolina Pro Late Model Series in a 100-lap event. Baldwin, who went to New Smyrna with no 602 Modified starts to his credit, left Florida with two victories in four events and a championship in the division earlier this month. The step to Late Models will be yet another move up the ladder for Baldwin at a young age. Known as “The Birthplace of NASCAR Stars”, Hickory Motor Speedway originally opened as a half-mile dirt track and was paved in 1967. Today, the track operates under the NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series as a .363-mile asphalt oval. Shoreside Support, owned by Luke's brother Tommy Baldwin III, is the global leader in mega yacht provisioning. Shoreside Support provides the world's largest mega yachts with gourmet food products, supplies & equipment with the mission of making the lives of yacht captains, chefs and crew as efficient as possible anywhere they cruise. For more information, visit www.shoresidesupport.com. "I'm proud of Luke's progress behind the wheel, but I am more impressed with the way he carried himself throughout the week at New Smyrna,” Tommy Baldwin III said. “I think he's got some great potential, and Shoreside Support is really excited to be a part of this.” Luke knows the challenge will be tough – but is excited to get behind the wheel and gain experience at such a historic track. “Definitely super excited for this opportunity to work with everyone involved,” Luke Baldwin said. “Driving a Pro Late Model was something I have always wanted to do, but I wouldn’t have ever imagined it would happen this soon. If you were to have told me two weeks ago this would happen, I would have called you crazy. Starting at a place like Hickory is awesome – a historic venue close to home is cool. The aged surface will be tough, but I believe I’m ready for anything you put in front of me.” DLP Motorsports team owner David L. Pletcher, also known as “Buggie” in the garage, has fielded cars for rising stars like Stephen Nasse and current NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Josh Berry before, and knows how to get the job done. He’s excited to work with Luke – especially after what he saw during the World Series of Asphalt at New Smyrna. “First time I met him was during Speedweeks down there in Florida,” Pletcher said. “He’s friends with another driver in our team. Luke is a likable kid and I watched him race out there respectfully and clean. He did a great job and was impressive at New Smyrna. He seems like someone who really wants to do this and wants to succeed, and it’s important for me to help those young kids that are trying to get started.” “We like what we see with Luke and we want to help him with his development as a race car driver,” Lorin Rainer with Chevrolet Development, said. Coby Looking For 5th Win in Spring Sizzler Driving 7NY With Mayhew Tools Sponsorship
MILFORD, Conn. – Tommy Baldwin Racing (TBR) and Doug Coby Racing jointly announced today that Coby will compete in the 51st annual NAPA Spring Sizzler in April driving the Mayhew Tools 7NY. The historic event, which takes place on April 29-30 at Stafford Motor Speedway in Connecticut, is $20,000 to win and had over 40 cars in the pit area attempting to qualify last season. With Mayhew Tools on board as sponsor for the special event, the team will be a threat for the gold. Coby and Baldwin are competing full-time on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour in 2023, with Coby chasing his seventh drivers title, and Baldwin chasing a second straight owner’s championship. The addition of such a prestigious event like the Spring Sizzler to the schedule for the potent combination will give them an opportunity to score the historic prize in a historic car number. Although Coby has four Sizzler wins, all of them came in NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour competition. The 51st annual NAPA Spring Sizzler will follow a Open Modified format for the second straight year, with two, 40-lap, $3,500 to win NAPA Auto Parts Duel races on Saturday, April 29, and the 100-lap, $20,000 to win feature on Sunday, April 30. All of the racing will air live on FloRacing.TV. Coby and Baldwin are both excited to chase the prize against stout competition. “If I were to win with Tommy it would be my fifth Sizzler win with my fourth different crew chief so that would be cool,” Coby said. “Stafford is my home track and any more success I have there just adds to it. The Spring Sizzler is a big race – it’s really one of the last remaining races with an amazing amount of history. To go there and win in the Open Modifieds, with all of the different packages people bring, the qualifying format, etc… It would be special. We’re going to bring a bullet. It’s a big race to win and a lot of money on the line. As Mayhew Tools and I have progressed in our relationship, we continue to try to find ways to increase their brand recognition and this will be a major event for the Mayhew Tools, Tommy Baldwin Racing 7NY.” “Doug is surely no stranger to visiting Victory Lane at Stafford,” Tommy Baldwin Jr. said. “With his many years of laps and experience, he gives us a great shot of getting the job done. The Spring Sizzler is a historic race with a long history. We will be ready to go with our best against what is going to be a really tight field of cars.” For more information on the NAPA Spring Sizzler, fans are encouraged to visit StaffordMotorSpeedway.com. Rising Star Pilots Tommy Baldwin Racing 602 Modified For Two Wins, World Series Title in Four Races
Story by Souza Media NEW SMYRNA, Fla. – After only select starts in Legends Cars, and very few test laps prior to the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at New Smyrna Speedway, Luke Baldwin went to Florida just to gain experience in 2023. When he left the half-mile, high-banked Florida oval, Baldwin had two wins, and a World Series championship in the 602 Modified division to his credit. “We went down to New Smyrna just to get a feel for the car and gain some experience, so to be leaving with that kind of success, it’s something I would have never imagined,” Luke Baldwin said. “Being pretty fast right out of the gate was a huge confidence boost and it gave me a great mindset. Even after the first two days, I didn’t expect to go out there and win in my third race. The goal was just to keep the car in one piece and maybe grab a podium.” After practicing for the first time on Sunday, February 12, Baldwin strapped behind the wheel in a race that night, and ran inside the top-five, until he was trapped on the bottom on a late restart and lost a few spots, finishing eighth. He returned on Monday, February 13, and finished fourth. On Tuesday, February 14, with goals of just finishing another race strong, Luke could have never imagined he would park the 7NY in Victory Lane. After 25 laps, he was celebrating his first career win in rather dominating fashion in just his third Modified start. “It was unreal, honestly, it’s still hitting me and I’m not sure I even believe it yet,” Baldwin said. “It was something I’ve never felt before. I’m still trying to find the words to describe it.” “Stepping into it at such a fast track like New Smyrna, it was a little bit nerve racking. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I had so many people behind me giving me advice and guiding me through it, it came to me quickly. Being top 15 in the first practice of the week on some old tires gave me confidence and it just continued to grow.” Baldwin entered the final night for the 602 Modifieds looking to continue to gain experience, but after three top-10 finishes, it was impossible not to start thinking about winning the championship for the week going into the finale. In the end, Baldwin parked the car back in Victory Lane for the second time in the final night – which was enough to seal the championship for the week by two points. “It’s one of the best wins and moments of my career,” Tommy Baldwin Jr. said after his son, Luke, scored his first career win. “To come here to New Smyrna, it’s an intimidating track. To see how Luke handled himself and prepared himself to be there… All of it is why he ran so well. His thought-process is amazing inside the car. He asked questions where you can tell he’s been listening and paying attention for a long time. I’m proud of him.” It was the second consecutive World Series title for Tommy Baldwin Racing – one year after Jimmy Blewett piloted the 7NY in the Tour-Type Modifieds to the title during the week. This time, the team celebrated a 602 Modified crown with a rising star, Luke Baldwin. “Keeping the family legacy going is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” Luke said. “To do it at a track like New Smyrna, it was special to me, with all of the success my family had there over the years. Obviously I never got to meet my Grandfather, but the stories I have heard about the kind of person he was are incredible. It’s in my blood. It’s safe to say he was definitely there with me last week.” For more information on Luke Baldwin, visit the Luke Baldwin Racing page on Facebook.
