Mayhew Tools, Tommy Baldwin Racing No. 7NY Back on Track Wednesday
Race Advance by Souza Media MILFORD, Conn. – For the first time, Doug Coby will sit behind the wheel of a car prepared by Tommy Baldwin at Thompson Speedway on Wednesday night. Although the two have worked together just over one year, won races, and competed at various tracks, Thompson hasn’t come up yet on the list with Coby driving the No. 7NY. Now, the opportunity is here for Wednesday’s NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Thompson 150 presented by FloSports. Entering the thick of the summer and the championship battle, Coby will need a strong run at Thompson to help himself crawl back into that title battle. He is currently fourth, 42 points out of the lead, with eight races remaining. If he wants to capture his seventh championship in 2023, the time is now to start making ground. Coby has watched Baldwin have speed at Thompson over the years. The No. 7NY has been to Victory Lane in multiple Open Modified shows in the past few years and won the pole with Jimmy Blewett driving last year during the Whelen Modified Tour event in August. In his own career at Thompson, Coby has six wins to his credit. He finished third in this race last year driving his own No. 10, and led 77 laps in the World Series last October in his own ride. “Thompson is a track where you can move around and find what works better for you and your car,” Coby said. “It can be really fun when you come in for tires on a pit stop and then everyone tries to get back through the field. We will see how it unfolds this time around. It’s probably a lot of the drivers' odds-on favorite track to race as long as the pavement works with you and allows for a good race. Tommy’s car seems to have been good on the long run there the last few times out and it usually comes down to managing tires and not falling off on the long run lately at Thompson. I have a ton of starts there and I was lucky enough to go on a nice run of winning with the No. 2 team to win some races there. We’re looking forward to it with the Mayhew Tools team.” Thompson’s race day schedule includes NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour practice from 4-5 p.m., followed by Mayhew Tools qualifying at 6:20 p.m., and the green flag for the Thompson 150 presented by FloSports set for 8 p.m. The event will be live streamed on FloRacing.TV. Driving Mayhew Tools, Tommy Baldwin Racing No. 7NY, Coby Set For Action Race Advance by Souza Media MILFORD, Conn. – On top of trying to win the Claremont Clash 150 on Saturday night at Claremont Motorsports Park, Doug Coby will be looking to seal a mid-season championship title on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. The Whelen Granite State Short Track Cup is a three-race series put together by event promoter JDV Productions that merges events at Monadnock Speedway (May 6), Lee USA Speedway (May 27) and Claremont Motorsports Park (July 29) together – with a point-fund for the top-three finishers and multiple additional special awards. Entering the finale at Claremont, Coby holds a three-point lead over Jon McKennedy, who is not entered for Saturday’s race. He’s currently five points ahead of the defending Cup champion Matt Hirschman and seven ahead of Austin Beers. “It’s a little bit of extra money on the line and that’s the kind of thing that really helps the teams in our series,” Coby said. “The Whelen Granite State Short Track Cup is cool for the fans to follow, cool for the drivers and it’s definitely brought in a few local drivers to run with us.” On top of the Cup battle, Coby will be looking to tackle Claremont, one of the toughest tracks on the schedule for the Whelen Modified Tour. He only has limited laps at Claremont in both Open Modifieds and racing on the Whelen Modified Tour - one race in each. Last year, he drove the Tommy Baldwin Racing No. 7NY to a ninth-place finish. Coby enters the race third in the Whelen Modified Tour point standings, but more than 30 points out with nine races remaining. From here on out, he plans to chase the wins to get back in it. “It’s only going to be my third time going to Claremont,” Coby said. “It’s a tricky place and we definitely didn’t hit it right last year, but we’ve made some improvements for this year. We struggled at Monadnock last year and we changed some stuff and won there this year, so we’re confident. It’s a track position kind of race. The goal is to have a better car in qualifying and in the beginning of the race to start up front.” “The wins get you the bonus points. If someone you’re racing in the points wins and you finish third, it’s not a small swing with the way the bonus points work. It has to be a winner mentality from here on out.” The Claremont Motorsports Park schedule includes NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour practice from 2:25-3:25 p.m., followed by Mayhew Tools pole qualifying at 5:45 p.m. The estimated green time for the Claremont 150 is 8:30 p.m., live on FloRacing.TV. Race Advance by Souza Media MILFORD, Conn. – The annual NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour trip to New Hampshire Motor Speedway is set for this Saturday, July 15. Doug Coby and the Tommy Baldwin Racing, Mayhew Tools team will return to the 1.058-mile oval looking to improve on their run at the track last year. In the 2022 event, Coby finished seventh after some mid-race issues forced him to charge from the back of the pack. In 36 New Hampshire starts, Coby does have four wins, with the most recent coming in 2016. The track produces one of the top races of the year for the Whelen Modified Tour - with drafting a major player in the winner, while most times, the race comes down to the final few feet before the winner is decided. Coby is looking to get back to Victory Lane for the second time this season on the Whelen Modified Tour. His first victory was at Monadnock Speedway back in May. “Racing at New Hampshire has changed a lot in the last couple of years because it’s a lot more difficult to put yourself in position to be there with a chance to win,” Coby said. “A lot of people are changing their strategies and refining their stuff to be there. Some of them are more willing to shuffle you out for fourth or fifth with 15 laps to go… you just have to have a car that can pull out of line and make passes. It comes down to having a good car and doing the best you can to put yourself in a good spot for the final laps.” The New Hampshire Motor Speedway events are set for two-days, with practice and qualifying for the Mohegan Sun 100 on Friday and the main event on Saturday evening. The race will air live on FloRacing.TV at 6 p.m., just after the NASCAR Xfinity Series race on Saturday. WALL, N.J. – Driving the Mayhew Tools No. 7NY, Doug Coby looked to be in position to score his first career NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour win at Wall Stadium Speedway on Saturday night. Left as one of the few tracks on the schedule that Coby hadn’t won a race, the six-time series champion charged to second, then passed Ron Silk off turn two for the lead on lap 108.
However, just a mere half-straightaway later, as they dove off into turn three, contact between Coby’s right-front tire and lapped car Anthony Nocella’s left-rear sent Coby spinning to the bottom of the track and out of the lead. He would restart just outside the top-10, charge back through, and bring the Tommy Baldwin Racing entry home in sixth position after the Jersey Shore 150, but certainly felt like at the time he was in a good spot to contend for the win. “You certainly never know what’s going to happen on the late restarts but I think we had the best car at that point in the race heading for the end,” Coby said. “I know we put ourselves in position to make the right moves to win the race and I thought we were doing that with the opportunity there to get out front and get ready for the finish. My car was getting better at that point when I made the move to get around Ron.” Doug Coby will be back on the track for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Mohegan Sun 100 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Saturday, July 15. Race Advance by Souza Media MILFORD, Conn. – Six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby will look to add yet another track to his winners list this Saturday night. Wall Stadium Speedway, located in New Jersey, is a high-banked, high-speed track that has tight corners and often produces exciting side-by-side racing. When the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour rolls into town for the Jersey Shore 150, Coby will drive the Tommy Baldwin Racing, Mayhew Tools No. 7NY. With one win this season (Monadnock Speedway), Coby enters the race third, 30 points back in the championship standings on the Whelen Modified Tour circuit entering the eighth race of the season. In his 35 career wins, Coby has been to Victory Lane at 12 different tracks. At Wall Stadium, Coby has three career Tour starts, with only one coming in the last 18 years. Coby started sixth, led 72 laps and finished 10th in 2019. He did not compete in the Whelen Modified Tour event at Wall last year, but Jimmy Blewett won in the Tommy Baldwin Racing entry Coby will be driving for this event. “I watched the race last year and it didn’t seem like it was similar to the one in 2019,” Coby said. “It seemed like the groove had moved around. Wall is one of those places that can throw a lot at you – and a lot can happen quickly. Our car will be good. I’ve never won there and it’s on my bucket list of tracks where I want to win. I got my first pole there, used to race at Little Wall as a kid, and I’ve always liked the facility.” Saturday’s practice session will roll from 3:30-4:30 p.m., followed by Mayhew Tools qualifying and the Jersey Shore 150 at 8 p.m. The main event will be live on FloRacing.TV for those who would like to watch from home. Mayhew Tools No. 7NY Set For Battle in 200-Lap NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Race Saturday Night
MILFORD, Conn. – Last time out at Riverhead Raceway on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, the day didn’t go the way Doug Coby would have imagined. Coby started the race two laps down and never recovered after an issue post-qualifying forced the team to change parts on the car. This Saturday night, Doug and the Tommy Baldwin Racing, Mayhew Tools No. 7NY team head back to New York looking to rebound and capitalize on the opportunity. Coby and Baldwin teamed together for the first time in May of 2022 and won their first race at Riverhead. After not winning in his first 19 Riverhead starts, Coby scored his first win at the New York track in 2021. He would follow it up with a second straight a few months later, and add his third win last season. In his last 13 Riverhead races, the six-time Whelen Modified Tour champion has finished top-10 in all but three of them. “We thought we had a car that could have competed with Justin (Bonsignore, winner) and Ron (Silk, second) when we were there last month,” Coby said. “Riverhead sprays down the track a bit differently it seems like every time we go there, and the track has been changing each time. We will have to adapt to that on Saturday. We definitely have an idea of what we need to do to make the car better and I think we will be ready to go for 200 laps.” As Riverhead honors Mike Ewanitsko Saturday night in the 200-lap event, the series will practice from 3:15-4:15 p.m., followed by Mayhew Tools qualifying at 6 p.m. The race will begin at 8 p.m., live on FloRacing.TV. Jack Set For Three SK Modified Events; Luke Set For Three SK Light Modified Races
MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Tommy Baldwin Racing announced today a partnership with Keith Rocco Racing to put both Luke and Jack Baldwin behind the wheel of Modifieds for three events at Connecticut’s Stafford Motor Speedway. Luke Baldwin will pilot an SK Light Modified for Rocco, while Jack Baldwin will be behind the wheel of one of the SK Modifieds inside the stable. Both drivers will race on June 23, August 4 and September 8. “It’s a good opportunity for both of them to get to one of the most competitive weekly tracks in the entire country and race in two impressive divisions,” Tommy Baldwin said. “Stafford’s SK Modifieds and SK Light Modifieds need no introduction. Both have some of the best rising Modified drivers in New England and both have multiple winners each year and impressive groups of champions. We’re excited to see both Luke and Jack continue their Modified career with these events this summer.” In the SK Modifieds for Jack Baldwin, all three events mark extra-distance. On June 23, the SK Modifieds will compete in the Senator’s Cup, set for 50 laps. On August 4, the 10th annual NAPA SK 5K returns to the track for 100 laps. On September 8, the 40-lap main event will be followed by the TC Shootout for the top-13 finishers in the field during the regular event. The TC Shootout is a 13-lap race in honor of the late, great Modified star Ted Christopher. “Racing in the SK Modifieds at Stafford Motor Speedway certainly will be considered the pinnacle of my Modified career so far,” Jack Baldwin said. “With the talent they have in that division and the competition where it is right now with names like Jimmy Blewett, Keith Rocco, Mike Christopher Jr. and more… it’s going to be something special to race against them this season – especially in a car prepared by Rocco.” Luke Baldwin’s competition in the SK Light Modifieds will come in the car that Jack drove at Stafford during the Spring Sizzler in the division back in May. All three of the SK Light Modified races are slated for 20 laps. Luke has already pocketed a championship in the Crate Modified division at New Smyrna Speedway during the World Series back in February. “To go to another race track where my family has such a rich history, it’s an awesome feeling,” Luke Baldwin said. “I’m really excited to finally get the New England Modified experience in such a competitive division at Stafford. I’m even more excited to be driving for a guy like Keith Rocco – a champion and one of the best to do it in weekly racing competition at Stafford.” “All of us at Keith Rocco Racing are pleased to have the Baldwin brothers showcasing our equipment this summer,” Keith Rocco said. “Especially after the performance that Jack had at the Spring Sizzler, with a fifth-place finish after never even turning a lap on the track.” Stafford Motor Speedway runs weekly Friday night racing from April to September each year. Tommy Baldwin Racing competed in the NAPA Spring Sizzler in April with Doug Coby, finishing third in the prestigious event. The team is also planning to return with the Open Modified for the NAPA Fall Final in September with Mike Christopher Jr. behind the wheel. SEEKONK, Mass. – After a solid day at the track, Doug Coby and the Mayhew Tools, Tommy Baldwin Racing team finished second on Saturday night at Seekonk Speedway. Coby qualified the car in fourth spot and fell back a bit in the early laps, but worked the outside lane back to the runner-up spot quickly and ran there for the remainder of the laps in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour’s return to the Action Track of the East. Coby and Ron Silk raced hard for second late in the race, then three-time champion Justin Bonsignore joined the battle on the final restart. Coby was able to hold off both of them to come away with a second-place finish. He tried to chase down eventual winner Matt Hirschman for most of the race. “He (Hirschman) was slowing down in the traffic some, but he could pick it up whenever he wanted to do that,” Coby said. “We were in no danger of going a lap down and on a day like today where most of the field did go down a lap (all but five cars at the finish), that’s a good day. The Mayhew Tools team worked hard and we came away with a good finish.” Doug Coby and the Tommy Baldwin Racing team will be on track next at Riverhead Raceway with the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour on June 24. Race Six of NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Season Set For Saturday Night For Mayhew Tools 7NY
Race Advance by Souza Media MILFORD, Conn. – When race six of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season takes the green flag this Saturday night at Seekonk Speedway, Doug Coby will feel at home. The Milford, Connecticut, native is a multiple-time Seekonk winner – both in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour (2019, most recent winner and 2017) and in the track's prestigious Open Wheel Wednesday $10,000 to win Modified race, multiple times. Not only has he won at Seekonk in Modifieds, he’s also a winner of the Boston Louie Seymour Memorial for the NEMA Midgets. Seekonk, a third-mile oval, is a place where Coby feels he has the driving style to accomplish the goal heading into Saturday night: become the first two-time Tour winner in 2023. Through five Tour events, Coby is one of five different winners, rolling to Victory Lane at Monadnock Speedway in May. He’s joined by Ron Silk, Matt Hirschman, Justin Bonsignore and Austin Beers on that list. Seekonk does have new pavement down for 2023 down in the corners, something Coby is looking forward to trying in practice to see what it changes, if anything. “I don’t think it’s going to be the same old Seekonk from a driver's perspective,” Coby said. “I think it’s going to change the part of the track where a lot of people struggle, getting off the corner with their right foot and being there at the end. I think the pavement will give some people an ability to run outside more, hang around, in general have more grip… all of the things you prepare yourself for will be a bit different. The Mayhew Tools team has been working hard and will be ready to roll Saturday.” Racing at Seekonk Saturday begins with NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour practice from 3-4 p.m., followed by Mayhew Tools qualifying at 5:30 p.m. and the green flag for the Seekonk 150 at 8 p.m. All tickets are available in advance at SeekonkSpeedway.com and will be available on race day at the gates.
