NEW SMYRNA, Fla. -- When it comes to Tour Type Modified racing up and down the east coast in the last year, Tommy Baldwin Racing has been a force to be reckoned with. Tuesday at New Smyrna (Fla.) Speedway that force was shown not in a Tour Type Modified, but a 602 Modified. Sixteen year old Luke Baldwin, the son of Tommy Baldwin Jr., drove away with victory in the 25-lap 602 Modified feature Tuesday at the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at New Smyrna Speedway. “I’m speechless,” Luke Baldwin said. “I don’t even know what to say. The guys gave me a great car. … I don’t even know what to say right now. It’s special. My grandpa won so many races here.” Baldwin was making his third start in the car Tuesday.

NEW SMYRNA, Fla. – Doug Coby led the most laps in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season-opener at New Smyrna Speedway, and finished the 200-lap event in fifth spot on Saturday night, February 11.
Coby started from the Mayhew Tools pole after qualifying was washed out, leading the field to green in the Tommy Baldwin Racing 7NY after the field was set by 2022 owner’s points. Coby jumped to the lead quickly at the beginning and led laps, then after a few cycles of pit stops, found himself in the lead just after halfway and led a string of circuits during a long green-flag run. A caution in the final 50 laps, and a ton of hard racing for the lead and top-five spots, cycled Coby in and out of the podium. He would settle for fifth – even after being collected in a crash in the final laps and rebounding from it. Overall, it was a good start to the season for the Mayhew Tools team. “I would have loved to have won the race but we had a fantastic car out there,” Coby said. “We were just a tiny bit short on stagger on the last run. We are experienced together already as a group and I know the team knows I can manage the race, and I love that they can trust me to do what I need to do.” Jimmy Blewett drove the No. 76 for Tommy Baldwin Racing in the 200-lap event, and was running strong inside the top-10 late before he was collected in a crash. Blewett had to start at the tail of the field due to qualifying being rained out. The next NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event for Tommy Baldwin Racing will be at Richmond Raceway on Friday, March 31, with Doug Coby wheeling the Mayhew Tools No. 7NY. Race Advance by Souza Media
MILFORD, Conn. – Six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby will begin the season when the series hits the track at New Smyrna Speedway this Saturday night, February 11. Coby will strap behind the wheel of the historic 7NY for Tommy Baldwin Racing with sponsorship from Massachusetts-based company Mayhew Tools. Coby and Baldwin have teamed together for 2023 to chase Coby’s seventh title, and Baldwin’s second owner’s championship in a row. Coby is excited to get to the high-banks of New Smyrna – a track where he’s had success before. Although he didn’t start the only Tour race in the history of the track last year, Coby has wins to his credit in the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing Tour Modified division. Baldwin’s team also won the World Series Tour Modified championship last year at New Smyrna. “It’s important for us to start the season on a high note and I think we will have a car capable of winning the race,” Coby said. “We just have to make the right decisions with the tires we’re allowed to change on pit stops. This is one of those tracks where there are more than a handful of guys that run well – it’s not just one or two drivers. It’s one of the tracks that all of us love – being fast and a track that races well when the tire wear and different grooves come into play. It’s a neat track. So fast that sometimes when you practice you start wondering how you’re going to be able to pass someone, but when everything comes into play, it’s a good race.” NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour teams will have two practice sessions – one from 1-1:45 and another from 2:45-3:30 p.m., followed by Mayhew Tools pole qualifying at 6 p.m. For more information on Doug Coby Racing, visit DougCobyRacing.com and follow the team Facebook page for the latest updates from the track. Rising Star To Compete For Monaco Modified Tri-Track Championship
MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Tommy Baldwin Racing (TBR) announced today that Mike Christopher Jr. will return to the seat of the No. 7NY for the 2023 season. Christopher will pilot the car for the championship in the Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series in their six-race schedule, and additional events to be announced. Christopher is no stranger to racing for TBR – having won multiple races with the team – including his first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event in 2022 at Jennerstown Speedway and events at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park. Christopher will race in the Tri-Track Series at tracks like New London-Waterford Speedbowl, Seekonk Speedway, Stafford Motor Speedway and Thunder Road Speedbowl against one of the most competitive fields in Modified racing. “Michael has grown to be one of the top young talents in Modified racing and we’re happy to have him back with our team in 2023,” Tommy Baldwin Jr. said. “His success during the 2022 season helped us not only win the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour owners title, but also win at many Open Modified events at tracks in New England. He’s growing as a driver every time on the track and will help us be a major threat for the Tri-Track title in a competitive field of drivers and every race we run together in 2023.” Christopher is excited to return to the seat of the 7NY. “This is yet another great opportunity that Tommy is giving me and I can’t thank him enough,” Mike Christopher Jr. said. “If 2022 showed anything, it was that Tommy Baldwin Racing is a threat at every single race we enter. Whether it’s a hometrack of mine or a new one in the Northeast, we were strong. Expanding to competing with the Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series will be the perfect way to showcase ourselves to more tracks, fans and competitors.” Above all, Christopher is also hoping to build on all of the success the team had during the 2022 season, and hopes to pounce with more checkered flags. “Although we won races in 2022, we also lost some tough ones while we were up front,” Christopher Jr. said. “I know Tommy isn’t satisfied with that and is continuing to make our PSR Products cars even faster. It’s going to get even better. It’s been incredible working with him alongside his entire team. We all grow off each other and I’m extremely grateful to yet again stand with Tommy and see how the 2023 season goes for us.” For more information on Tommy Baldwin Racing, visit TommyBaldwinRacing.com and follow the team on social media for the latest updates. Coby Will Compete For Seventh Championship With Veteran Championship Car Owner on NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour
Press Release by Souza Media MILFORD, Conn. – Doug Coby and Tommy Baldwin Racing jointly announced today that Coby will pilot the historic No. 7NY for a full-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour campaign in 2023. Set to compete in the 19-race schedule that begins in February at New Smyrna Speedway, the team will carry primary sponsorship from Mayhew Tools – a sponsor that has been with Coby since 2017 and is happy to make the move with him to TBR. The partnership between Baldwin and Coby will allow the six-time series champion to chase a seventh championship, while also allowing Baldwin to try to continue his incredible run of success with his team. In 2022, Baldwin won the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour owners championship with three different drivers – Coby as one of them. The Milford, Connecticut, veteran won three races with Baldwin in 2022, including two straight early in the season at Lee USA Speedway and Riverhead Raceway, and another at Langley Speedway. Baldwin is excited to get work with Coby again, this time on a full-time basis. “We worked together for the first time last year and it sparked success right from the first laps we had together on the track,” Tommy Baldwin Jr. said. “Doug is a proven champion who knows how to be there at the end of races and the end of the year when it comes time to crown a champion. His record speaks for itself. With the year we had in 2022, we are looking forward to building on all of our success and putting ourselves back at the front again in 2023. Having Doug pilot the 7NY with the assistance of Mayhew Tools is a great opportunity for us.” Coby sits inside the top-six on the all-time wins on the Tour with 34 victories to go along with his six titles. He has finished inside the top-10 in the points in 12 consecutive seasons – including in 2022 – where he competed in 12 of the series’ 16 events – driving nine races for Baldwin and three for his own team. Mayhew Tools has been a major supporter of Coby in the last five years – including sponsoring his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series debut at Bristol Motor Speedway in 2021. Mayhew also sponsors the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour pole award at each event during the season. “Mayhew Tools and I have a great relationship, with the goal being to bring brand awareness to the Mayhew name through our partnership on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. I’ve been fortunate to have them with me at Mike Smeriglio Racing, my own team Doug Coby Racing, and now next season with Tommy Baldwin Racing,” said Coby. “Tommy’s family history in the Modifieds and his notoriety in NASCAR gives us a chance to get even more eyes on the Mayhew logo, and right now Tommy’s preparing the fastest cars in the pit area, so teaming up with Tommy full time on the Tour in 2023 is a huge opportunity for us. Chasing my seventh NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship behind the wheel of the 7NY is a pretty neat story and I can’t wait to build on the success we already found together last season.” The 2023 Whelen Modified Tour season will begin at New Smyrna Speedway in Florida on Saturday, February 11 and spread across eight states, ending in Virginia at Martinsville Speedway on Thursday, October 26, 2023. The series will visit multiple of New England’s staple race tracks including Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park, Seekonk Speedway, Monadnock Speedway and more, while also helping to headline weekends with NASCAR National Series at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Richmond Raceway and Martinsville Speedway, among other events. A full version of the 2023 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour schedule can be found here. “Mayhew Tools has been a supporter of Doug Coby and the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour pole award for many years, and we have had a tremendous amount of success in the past with Doug and his race teams,” said John Lawless, President of Mayhew Tools, “Last year was only a partial season for both Doug and Mayhew, but we are really looking forward to supporting the combination of Doug and Tommy Baldwin Racing for a full season on the Whelen Modified Tour. We think they’re going to be a team that will certainly contend for many wins and a championship this season, and we are excited to help them work together on a full time basis.” Details surrounding any additional events in 2023 outside of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour schedule for Doug Coby will be announced at a later date. Heady Also Scheduled To Compete In Select Tour-Type Modified Events, Starting at New Smyrna Speedway
MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Tommy Baldwin Racing announced today that rising star Caleb Heady will return to the seat of the 7NY for the 2023 season. Heady will defend his 2022 SMART Modified Tour title down south, showcasing his talents in a diverse 14-race series schedule for the new year. On top of competing on the SMART Modified Tour, Heady is also scheduled to begin the season in one of TBR’s Tour-Type Modifieds for the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at New Smyrna Speedway from February 13-17. Heady will also drive a TBR entry in the Race of Champions 73rd Annual Lucas Oil Race of Champions 250 at Lake Erie Speedway in September. The group will also team together for Open Modified events during the 2023 season, with an exact schedule to be released at a later date. “Caleb and our team clicked last year and we’re expecting similar results for the 2023 racing season,” Tommy Baldwin Jr. said. “The SMART Modified Tour has grown into a successful division down south – with a large variety of tracks – and they have a great schedule ready for the year. We’re excited to chase the championship again with them and also eager to get Caleb down to New Smyrna for the World Series against a stout driver lineup for even more Modified experience.” Heady, who has quickly moved up the ladder in racing from Legends Cars to Modifieds, anticipates getting to the front of the field and contending for trophies. “We’re super excited to be back with Tommy Baldwin Racing and be chasing a second SMART Modified Tour title this season,” Heady said. “I can’t wait to apply all that I learned during the 2022 season to this year. Being able to branch out and run more races with the team is exciting and we’re looking forward to it. I love learning new tracks and racing with the top competition in Modified racing in the country. I can’t wait to see what the season has in store for us.” For more information on Tommy Baldwin Racing, visit TommyBaldwinRacing.com and follow the team on social media for the latest updates. MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Two great friends will team together again for the 2023 season, as Tommy Baldwin Racing (TBR) announced today that Jimmy Blewett will pilot a car for TBR in select events for the new year.
Blewett’s season with TBR will begin at the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at New Smyrna Speedway from February 11-18 – where he will compete in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season-opener on February 11, and defend his Tour-Type Modified World Series championship from February 13-17. Aside from New Smyrna, Blewett will also compete in select NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour events for the team in 2023. Last year, Blewett drove a TBR entry to Victory Lane at his home track, Wall Stadium Speedway, and will return to New Jersey with hopes of doing it again this season in Whelen Modified Tour action. He will also drive a car for all three Tour stops at Riverhead Raceway on Long Island. Additional events are also possible and would be announced at a later date. “Jimmy is one of the toughest competitors of anyone to race against on the track,” Tommy Baldwin Jr. said. “Having him behind the wheel of one of our cars gives us a great chance to get to Victory Lane. We’ve been friends off the track for many years and when we team together, we have success. New Smyrna will be a great kick-off to the season for us and we hope to have the same results we had in 2022.” Blewett, who has scaled back a tick from full-time Modified racing for his family-owned team, is also focusing on competition for his son in a Modified for 2023. The partnership with Tommy Baldwin Racing is a great chance for Blewett to strap behind the wheel of a car he knows will be capable of winning right from the first laps on track. “I’m just thankful for my friendship with Tommy,” Blewett said. “He has treated me like a part of his family the past two years. I don’t have the time with the passing of my Grandfather to race like I did, or have the time to prepare a car. Tommy and Phil from PSR stepped up in a huge way to make sure the new car we were assembling when my grandfather passed was completed and ready to make the haul to New Smyrna Speedway for the season opener. Without those guys and their crews, none of this would be possible. Anytime you get to race with the group of guys Tommy has is exciting. He always prepares a car capable of winning. Hopefully we can make all that hard work payoff here next month at New Smyrna and during the season.” Tommy Baldwin Racing will continue to announce additional drivers in the team stable for 2023 for additional events soon. Stay tuned for brand new Tommy Baldwin Racing apparel to also drop soon. MARTINSVILLE, Va. – After 16 races across seven different states on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour in 2022, Tommy Baldwin Racing officially celebrated the owners championship on Thursday night at Martinsville Speedway. Driving the No. 7NY, Jimmy “Showtime” Blewett celebrated with the team post-race, after coming close to Victory Lane in the 200-lap race – contending for the lead in the final laps before being swept up in a wreck. After years of trying, Baldwin finally sealed a championship on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour this season. And above all, he appreciates every single person who helped him get to this point – not only this season – but throughout his entire, and extensive, career in the sport. Baldwin has been just about everywhere from the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour to the NASCAR Cup Series and in between, but has found his bread and butter back in the Modifieds in the last few years, where he feels at home. The Modified community includes a group of dedicated crew members and drivers, many of which have a deep history in the grassroots style of racing. Baldwin is no different. From the early years working with his dad and learning everything he uses now to his advantage, he’s encountered some of the most genuine people in the garage area. With five feature wins and three different drivers sitting behind the wheel of the No. 7NY during the 2022 Whelen Modified Tour season, it was everything Baldwin and his family could have imagined. It was what Baldwin would call a dream year – and one that did exactly what he’s been banking on for his entire career – cemented the Baldwin name as champion, added to the already impressive resume, and cemented the No. 7NY as one of the top car numbers in series history. People won’t forget the 2022 season. “It’s been a long time coming,” Baldwin said. “My dad spent his whole life racing in the NASCAR Modifieds and to win the title with the No. 7NY, it’s cool to cement the legacy of our Baldwin name and this car number forever. I’ve always said you have to win a championship to cement everything and we did that this year with three different drivers. Even when we didn’t win, we were running up front. The team behind me, they all worked their butts off. To get the championship and lock it up a race early, it showed how tough we were all year.” From his father, and now living on through his sons, Baldwin has spent a ton of time at the race track, where he truly feels is home. He lives and breathes the sport. And so many people do it right alongside him. “It truly takes an army to be successful,” Baldwin said. “From the beginning, to know that so many people have touched our cars now and the cars my dad worked on and everything in between, it’s been a great ride. I want to thank everyone who has been involved with the success of the Baldwin’s. All of the guys and girls that came to the shop from the early 1970s to present, they’ve all had a piece and a part of our success. It’s not only about what we accomplished this year – but for the last 50 years.” This year, with three different drivers, Baldwin dominated the Whelen Modified Tour. Headlined by five wins, the team included the likes of Jimmy Blewett, six-time series champion Doug Coby and rising star Mike Christopher Jr. Highlights include Coby winning back-to-back races in his first two trips behind the wheel, Christopher Jr. winning his first career Whelen Modified Tour race in his third career start, and Blewett capturing a home track at Wall Stadium Speedway. The team looked up the owner’s championship after the event at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park, one whole race early. Baldwin’s team becomes the first since 2017 to win the owner’s championship without their driver also winning the driver’s title. With three different drivers, Baldwin decided early in the season he would chase the owner's title. Jon McKennedy, a driver inside the Tommy Baldwin Racing stable from 2018-2021, won the driver’s championship for the 2022 season. “You put this together with three different drivers, with five wins during the season,” Jimmy Wilson, Director of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, said during the title presentation. “This is really, really cool. To have your owner’s championship, cementing the Baldwin name into the record books as a champion… it’s special. On behalf of the France family and everyone at NASCAR, we’re very proud to have you as our owner’s champion this season. I can only imagine your dad is smiling from above.” “Winning the title… it’s for all the people that have gone to war with our family,” Baldwin said. To celebrate on the frontstretch at Martinsville, Baldwin unloaded a piece of Modified history – one of his dad’s former cars – with the No. 7NY on the side of the historic Modified coupe. It added yet another element to an incredible season and created a photo opportunity of a lifetime. “It’s even more special to have this car here for the celebration,” Baldwin said. “For me, it’s about having it here to showcase our history and how we made it to this point. There have been so many people that have helped my family get here all the way from the beginning through now, in all different types of divisions. But to come back into the Modifieds and chase this title… we had one hell of a year and it’s great to celebrate it all at Martinsville, a place that is so deep in Modified history.” In the 16 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour events, the team finished inside the top-10 in all but two races, and combined, drivers led 543 laps. “We were fast right off the trailer as usual with Tommy and his guys,” Blewett said at Martinsville post-race. “Our main goal was accomplished today with all of the hard work and dedication the team has put in all year to win the championship. Tommy gave me the opportunity to be his driver and I feel to be a leader of the team. Mike Jr. is one heck of a wheelman and Doug’s resume speaks for itself. It’s a good deal.” Overall, it’s the third title of the year for the Tommy Baldwin Racing team – adding to the SMART Tour triumph with driver Caleb Heady down south – and the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing championship from February at New Smyrna Speedway. Tommy Baldwin Racing will return to the track – for another race – for the North-South Shootout – with three cars at Caraway Speedway on Saturday, November 5. Blewett, Coby and Heady will all drive for the team in the special event. For more information on Tommy Baldwin Racing, visit the team on Facebook. By Souza Media
After a successful season with Tommy Baldwin Racing winning the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour owners championship, the team will officially celebrate the crown this Thursday, October 27 at Martinsville Speedway. In the chase for the Grandfather Clock trophy on a special night for the entire team in Virginia, Tommy Baldwin Jr. has tabbed Jimmy Blewett to drive the No. 7NY in the season-finale. Blewett drove the car to success already this season – winning the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing championship at New Smyrna Speedway in February, and also capturing a victory on the Whelen Modified Tour at Wall Stadium Speedway in July. Blewett and Baldwin are no strangers to working together, and are close friends away from racing on the track. The team will officially be presented with the championship trophy post-race, after Blewett, Doug Coby and Mike Christopher Jr. split the ride this season. On the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour alone, the team has five wins in the first 15 races – with Coby capturing three and Christopher and Blewett one each. The Tommy Baldwin Racing team also just celebrated a championship on the SMART Modified Tour with driver Caleb Heady last weekend. “It’s only fitting to have Jimmy drive the car for the final race of the season,” Baldwin said. “It’s going to be an exciting night down there with the celebration that will happen after the race, but we want to make sure we seal up another win before it’s over. We want to go out with a bang. Jimmy is a proven winner and there aren’t many drivers out there I trust as much as him. With everything he’s had to deal with throughout his racing career, and the ride we’ve been on, winning together in the 7NY at Martinsville on this special night would make it even more memorable.” Blewett is no stranger to winning at Martinsville Speedway. In 2006, he won the inaugural Whelen Modified Tour race at the Paperclip, driving for the late Ed Partridge. And even though since then he’s failed to finish in his last three starts there, Blewett’s always had speed. He’s looking forward to getting back behind the wheel of the car and also prepared to get Baldwin his wish in Victory Lane. “We’re really excited to get to Martinsville because Tommy’s goal was accomplished as the owners champion and we can go into the race without that pressure as a team,” Blewett said. “Knowing you are going there with the best team going right now, it’s an incredible feeling. These guys have been on top of their game all year. They make guys like my teammates and I shine and with that said, it’s no pressure – just go for the win for us. Hopefully we can do just that. It would be nice to get the boss man that Grandfather Clock.” Thursday’s action at Martinsville Speedway includes one practice session from 3-4 p.m., followed by Mayhew Tools pole qualifying at 5 p.m. The final race of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season will take the green flag at 8 p.m., live on FloRacing.TV. Tommy Baldwin Racing locked up their third championship of the season on Saturday night at Motor Mile Speedway, as Caleb Heady and the team celebrated a title on the SMART Modified Tour. Although a mechanical failure sidelined the No. 7NY on lap 10 of the race, the team was enough points ahead due to a consistent season down south to still lock up the title. Heady – who made the move full-time to Tour-Type Modifieds this year after many successful seasons in Legends Cars – picked up a victory early in the season, then rode momentum with consistency through the summer on the SMART Tour. The title was the third of the season for Tommy Baldwin Racing – also winning the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour owner’s championship, and the New Smyrna Speedway World Series of Asphalt title back in February. It’s been a dream year for the team and it isn’t over yet. “To get everyone together and do what we did this year, I don’t even know what to say,” Baldwin said. “Three championships, four different drivers. I love the SMART Modified Tour and the tracks we race on. I’m so proud of everyone that has helped me get here today. To win all of these titles and all of the races with these guys behind me, it’s awesome.” Baldwin is used to working with a variety of different style drivers, especially this year. On the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, he worked with three different drivers, each of different experience levels. Six-time series champion Doug Coby, multiple-time Wall Stadium Speedway champion Jimmy Blewett and rising star Mike Christopher Jr. wheeled for him on the Tour. On the SMART Tour, it was Heady – who is new to Modifieds – but caught on quickly. Working with young blood is nothing Baldwin wasn’t prepared for. “I’ve worked with young drivers my whole life – dealing with drivers like Kasey Kahne in the NASCAR Cup Series down through Caleb and my sons – you have to let them grow and watch them grow and help them get there,” Baldwin said. “It’s been so much fun this year dealing with all of the different drivers and different attitudes. Caleb has been great to work with.” Heady jumped from the car at Motor Mile, elated with the championship trophy on the SMART Modified Tour, even after a difficult day at a track where he felt confident. To race in a growing Southern Modified division like the SMART Series against the likes of NASCAR Hall of Famer Bobby Labonte, southern modified great Burt Myers, and others, winning the title is a massive accomplishment. “Man this is crazy,” Heady said. “This is our first full year trying in the Modifieds and to win the championship, it’s special. To be able to not even finish the last race and still win the championship, because we were so far ahead, it’s incredible.” “Going into the race we knew we were in a good spot,” Heady continued. “But the second we broke, I was nervous. The nerves were high but it’s over now and we did it. The car is just bad fast everywhere we go. If we lose a race, it comes down to whoever is in the driver's seat. I can’t thank Tommy and the team enough for helping me along the way… at the end of the day, we’re champions. We got it!” Tommy Baldwin Racing will return to the track for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season-finale at Martinsville Speedway on Thursday, October 27. The team will officially be crowned the champions for the series owner's title. For more information on Tommy Baldwin Racing, visit the team on Facebook for the latest updates. |
