Tommy Baldwin Racing announced today that the team with PSR Products will maintain a car for Caleb Heady to complete the SMART Modified Tour 2023 season, beginning tonight at Ace Speedway. The car, out of the Tommy Baldwin Racing stable, will be overseen by TBR veteran short-track Modified crew member Glenn Dixon and the PSR team.
Heady is the defending champion of the SMART Modified Tour. So far this season, Heady is fifth in the championship battle with one victory. The SMART Modified Tour runs a points system where the top three in points after the penultimate race of the season will advance to the final race with a shot at winning the title. In that final race, the driver who finishes ahead of the other two wins the championship. Heady is looking to make it back-to-back. TBR owner Tommy Baldwin Jr. announced earlier this week that he was taking an indefinite leave of absence from racing for cancer treatments. The opportunity for PSR to maintain the car made it all possible. “I’m thankful for the team at PSR and Glenn Dixon for helping to make sure Caleb has a chance to defend his SMART Modified Tour title this year,” Tommy Baldwin Jr. said. “The amount of support and well wishes sent to myself and my family over the last few days has been incredible. We appreciate each and every one of you.” For more information on PSR Products, visit PSRProducts.net. For more information on Tommy Baldwin Racing, visit TommyBaldwinRacing.com. Today, I post with news that no one ever wants to hear… I have cancer.
It’s treatable, but this past week of racing will be the last for a while for the Tommy Baldwin Racing team. Going to take a break & begin treatment to beat it into the ground. This is not a post for pity. I want to let the world know that if you don’t feel right, go get checked out by a doctor now. Don’t wait. If I can save one life by posting this, I have done my job. Never be scared to go see the doctor - it could save your life. Take the message & share it with those you love before it’s too late. I will beat this challenge like every other. The grind begins now! Thanks to everyone for the support. See you all at the track as soon as possible. #$uckCancer THOMPSON, Conn. – Doug Coby started second and led laps early at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park on Wednesday night, but didn’t have the car he needed in the final laps to contend for another Thompson win.
The Mayhew Tools, Tommy Baldwin Racing No. 7NY was strong early, jumping out front and leading laps. The team rolled to pit road at the halfway point, along with the rest of the field, for fresh Hoosier rubber, and right after the stop, Coby chased the back bumper of eventual winner Justin Bonsignore looking to pounce to get back out front. However, the car faded a bit in the final laps, and he ended up eighth. “We adjusted at the pit stop and it wasn’t where it needed to be,” Coby said. “We were running second there after the restart and I felt like if I could have passed Justin (Bonsignore) for the lead and controlled the restarts we might have had a shot, but the car just wasn’t good enough for us to be able to run how we needed at the end.” For more information on Doug Coby, visit DougCobyRacing.com and follow his page on Facebook for the latest news and updates, including from the track on race day. Race Advance by Souza Media MILFORD, Conn. – For the first time, Doug Coby will sit behind the wheel of a car prepared by Tommy Baldwin at Thompson Speedway on Wednesday night. Although the two have worked together just over one year, won races, and competed at various tracks, Thompson hasn’t come up yet on the list with Coby driving the No. 7NY. Now, the opportunity is here for Wednesday’s NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Thompson 150 presented by FloSports. Entering the thick of the summer and the championship battle, Coby will need a strong run at Thompson to help himself crawl back into that title battle. He is currently fourth, 42 points out of the lead, with eight races remaining. If he wants to capture his seventh championship in 2023, the time is now to start making ground. Coby has watched Baldwin have speed at Thompson over the years. The No. 7NY has been to Victory Lane in multiple Open Modified shows in the past few years and won the pole with Jimmy Blewett driving last year during the Whelen Modified Tour event in August. In his own career at Thompson, Coby has six wins to his credit. He finished third in this race last year driving his own No. 10, and led 77 laps in the World Series last October in his own ride. “Thompson is a track where you can move around and find what works better for you and your car,” Coby said. “It can be really fun when you come in for tires on a pit stop and then everyone tries to get back through the field. We will see how it unfolds this time around. It’s probably a lot of the drivers' odds-on favorite track to race as long as the pavement works with you and allows for a good race. Tommy’s car seems to have been good on the long run there the last few times out and it usually comes down to managing tires and not falling off on the long run lately at Thompson. I have a ton of starts there and I was lucky enough to go on a nice run of winning with the No. 2 team to win some races there. We’re looking forward to it with the Mayhew Tools team.” Thompson’s race day schedule includes NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour practice from 4-5 p.m., followed by Mayhew Tools qualifying at 6:20 p.m., and the green flag for the Thompson 150 presented by FloSports set for 8 p.m. The event will be live streamed on FloRacing.TV.
